Accident Summary:
ON ^24DECEMBER 1968^, AT APPROXIMATELY ^0930 HOURS^, VICINITY ^COORDINATES XS 328 458^, ^WO1 GREGORY R. HEPINSTALL^ WAS AIRCRAFT COMMANDER AND TEAM LEADER OF A LIGHT FIRE TEAM COVERING "PEOPLE SNIFFER" OPERATIONS. ^1LT. JOHN D. PATTERSON^ WAS FLYING THE LEAD AIRCRAFT AT A DISTANCE OF 50 TO 75 METERS OF 50 TO 75 METERS BEHIND THE "SNIFFER" AIRCRAFT. WHILE EXECUTING A RIGHT 180 TURN, ^1LT PATTERSON^ PUT THE AIRCRAFT INTO AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF RIGHT BANK. AS THE AIRCRAFT BEGAN TO LOSE ALTITUDE DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE MANEUVER, ^1LT PATTERSON^ PULLED PITCH TO THE POINT OF RPM BLEED-OFF. THE AIRCRAFT CONTINUED ITS DESCENT, COTINUING TO LOSE RPM. THE PILOT THEN NOTICED THAT THE RPM WAS BLEEDING OFF AND PULLED MORE PITCH IN THE MISTAKEN NOTION THAT IT WOULD GIVE HIM MORE POWER AND BRING UP THE RPM. THE AIRCRAFT COMMANDER THEN TOOK THE CONTROLS AND WAS FORCED TO FLY THROUGH A TREE LINE BEFORE HE WAS ABLE TO REGAIN RPM AND CONTROL OF THE AIRCRAFT AND FLY IT BACK TO DONG TAM.\\
